This OP-Ed article published in the Los Angeles Times exposes an often used marketing tool promoted by pharmaceutical manufacturers, the copay assistance program. These programs are marketed under the aspect of "patient support" but are really designed to drive utilization and shelter the patient from the costs of their products. It's well documented these programs drive up costs and bypass payer benefit management measures, adding to an ever increasing drug prescription tab.
It's important to know that because of the dubious nature of these manufacturer "support" programs they are excluded from use by federal government health programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.
